Ride from Eltham to Yan Yean Reservoir
Today's ride started off with a casual ride from Diamond Creek to the assembly point of Eltham train station where we assembled the group of riders. A short trip to Woolies across the road was met with the beginnings of a shower, and by the time we got going the rain was here to stay. Construction works on the Eltham train tracks meant a detour on the footpath to rejoin the bike track. This was followed by a slightly soggy ride to Diamond Creek where the group stopped whilst a Mum delivered some wet weather gear and everyone warmed up their hands on some barbecues. The rain was really coming down by the time we hit the main road to Hurstbridge and we endured cold feet and numb fingers to get to Hurstbridge without incident. A brief stop in Hurstbridge confirmed that the ride to Whittlesea was a bit optimistic in this weather and we'd conclude the ride a bit early. The rain stopped shortly afterwards and a few kilometers down the road we met the first bit of sun for the day. We wound our way through Nutfield and Arthur's Creek and stopped for a snack at the primary school. We were greeted by some lovely views and encouragement from the downhill slope we were to leave the school on. Not long after leaving the school the going got hilly and the gears were getting a workout. Shortly before arriving at our lunch stop the road threw us a few 50m monster hills and by the time we got to Yan Yean we were quite the hungry bunch. Lunch was uneventful bar a bird that didn't like bread, and we soon turned around for the trip home. The going soon got much easier, with the monster hills to fly down on the way home. The going was generally downhill for most of the way home, where we lost about 150 meters. By now, the weather was thoroughly sunny and the majority of our soggy clothing had dried out. Our trip down the bike path to Eltham was interrupted when a small kid ran her bike off the path and into a scrubby embankment. After fetching said bike and being thanked for our troubles we kept going. Quite a few of our number disappeared on the way to Eltham, peeling off to ride home and I went for lunch having arrived at Eltham again.
